Granville Cty Hopes to Cash In On Oxford-Based Bank: Herald Sun, 8/3
A group of Granville County residents and business leaders plan to start a new bank that will be headquartered in Oxford. The new bank, called Union Bank & Trust, will be located on the first floor of the building at 108 College St., at the intersection with Hillsborough Street. The location was once home to the Union National Bank. Thomas Combs, formerly an executive at the BB&T Bank branch in Oxford, will serve as president and chief executive officer of Union Bank & Trust. He said the new bank would have a hometown touch, with a loan committee made up of local residents.
"We'll be able to make our decision here in Oxford," said Combs, noting that other banks located in Oxford have home bases elsewhere in the state. Capital Bank, RBC Centura, BB&T, SunTrust and Fidelity Bank all have locations in Oxford.

More Companies Looking @ Reselling Cellular: Hispanic Business: 8/4
The latest entrants into the mobile phone business are some big names you're probably more used to going to for DVDs, CDs or cable service.
Disney, ESPN and Time Warner are among the companies adding cellular to their roster of products and services, hoping consumers who spend entertainment dollars with their brands also will be ready to turn to them for wireless service.
But these new providers aren't constructing cell towers across the country. Instead, they're following a trail blazed three years ago by billionaire Richard Branson's Virgin Mobile service and leasing network capacity from major carriers such as Sprint PCS and Cingular Wireless.
"It's a new way of connecting with consumers who have never had a cell phone before," said Jeff Kagan, an independent telecom analyst in Atlanta. "And the nice thing for these companies is that they really don't have to have that many customers to make it successful. It's not like they're trying to operate a network." Currently, cellular resellers -- known in the business as mobile virtual network operators, or MVNOs -- have about 10 million U.S. subscribers and generate almost $2 billion in annual revenue, according to Boston-based Yankee Group. Virgin's youth-targeted service accounts for about a third of the total number of subscribers.

The Hottest Phone Company You Have Never Heard of: Business 2.0, 8/4
When Bill Gates took the stage at a Microsoft (MSFT) developers conference in Las Vegas in May, he used his keynote speech to showcase one of the most advanced mobile phones ever created. Compact, loaded with cutting-edge features, and capable of surfing the Internet at broadband speeds, the lustworthy handset wasn't built by Motorola (MOT), Nokia (NOK), Samsung, or any of the other usual cell-phone vendors. Instead it came from High Tech Computer, better known as HTC -- an upstart Taiwanese manufacturer that's best known for maintaining a low profile.

Sprint-US Unwired Deal Cleared: Herald Sun, 8/2
Federal regulators have cleared Sprint Corp.'s proposed acquisition of affiliate U.S. Unwired Inc., Sprint said in a Securities and Exchange Commission filing Tuesday. The Federal Trade Commission said it has agreed to "early termination" of its review of the $1.3 billion deal without requiring any changes. Overland Park-based Sprint said on July 11 that it planned to buy all outstanding shares of Lake Charles, La.-based U.S. Unwired for $6.25 each. As part of the deal, Sprint would also assume $266 million of U.S. Unwired's debt.
U.S. Unwired sells Sprint-branded services in nine southern states and serves 500,000 subscribers. It has 600 employees and reported 2004 revenues of $408 million.
The purchase would end a legal battle between the parent and affiliate companies, specifically stopping U.S. Unwired's request for a court injunction to halt Sprint's pending acquisition of Nextel Communications Inc. http://www.heraldsun.com/technology/33-632575.html
In-Person Bell South Payments to Rise: News & Observer, 8/3
The next time you walk into a food mart or check-cashing store to pay your BellSouth bill, take along an extra dollar. Facing a shortage of walk-in payment centers, BellSouth on Monday started allowing its 44 authorized centers -- such as Piggly Wiggly or an American Check Cashers -- to charge $1 to recoup the cost of processing customers' bills. BellSouth is the latest company to introduce what it calls a "convenience fee." Progress Energy, Verizon and Sprint customers already pay a $1 fee at some or all walk-in centers. To avoid the fee, customers can pay online, by mail or by credit card over the phone.

Report: Banks Fail to Verify Card Data: News & Observer, 8/3
By failing to program their ATM systems to check all the security codes on ATM and debit cards, many banks are letting thieves get away with an increasingly common fraud at a cost of several billion dollars a year.
A report Tuesday from Gartner, a technology analyst firm, estimates that 3 million U.S. consumers were victims of ATM and debit-card fraud in the past year.
The fraud most commonly begins when a criminal engages in "phishing" -- sending a legitimate-seeming e-mail with a link to a phony Web site that appears to belong to a consumer's bank, Gartner analyst Avivah Litan thinks.
The e-mail recipients are asked to give their account information, including PIN numbers. With that information "harvested," scam artists can make their own cards for automated teller machines and withdraw huge sums.

Report: 95% of Mobile Users Too Afraid to Download Games: Potomach Tech, 8/2
About 95% of "virgin" mobile-phone users are too afraid to
download video games to their handsets, according to a new survey by
mobile games firm I-Play. The survey of more than 2,500 mobile users in
Germany, Italy, Spain, the U.S. and the U.K. found that a third of
respondents did not know whether their handsets could accommodate
games, while about 17.5% admitted to not even knowing how to download
a game. Only 5% of respondents said that they have actually downloaded
a game. "The mobile games market is essentially only 5% penetrated,"
said David Gosen, the COO of I-Play. "The good news is that we now
know what's limiting market growth -- the industry must improve
accessibility to mobile games and, more importantly, educate
consumers on how and where to obtain mobile games."

Cell Phones Are Next Frontier For Internet Companies: Internet Week, 7/29
As Internet companies look for new revenue streams and customers, they see particularly fertile ground among the millions of cell-phone users. The Yankee Group reports that 65% of the U.S. population owns a cell phone. And increasingly, cell phones are becoming highly customizable and personalized devices that can be used for more than just phone calls, including E-mail, video streaming, and even Internet browsing.
Because people spend so much time on their cell phones, Internet companies are jumping on the opportunity by introducing more Web-browsing features to cell phone users. "There is a huge community of people reliant on portals like Google search on their personal computers," says Yankee Group analyst Linda Barrabee. "Extending that to mobile phones, which people always have when they're on the go, makes a lot of sense."

Front-End Alignment: How Wachovia Used Internal Branding: CMO, 8/05
Approaching downtown Charlotte, N.C., from the airport, one can't help noticing the Bank of America Stadium, home of the NFL's Carolina Panthers. Even on its home turf, Wachovia operates in the prominent shadow of its larger rival, a regular reminder of at least one alternative its customers have for their banking needs. Forgive Wachovia's executive team, then, if they're inclined to break out in a collective sweat over the topic of customer defections. It was just six years ago when customer satisfaction at the bank—then called First Union—hit rock-bottom. Customer attrition rates reached 20 percent in the first quarter of 1999. Not only were customers switching at record rates but employees were also running for the exits. Turnover among bank tellers hit a high of 49 percent in 1999.

Marketers Seek New Approach As DVRs Popularity Increases: WSJ, 7/29
With the use of digital-video recorders on the rise, TV watchers increasingly are fast-forwarding through commercials -- threatening the very economic model that television was founded upon. The new technology is sending ad-agency executives into overdrive to devise new ways to persuade viewers to watch promotional messages. The jury is out on whether consumers want to be passive when watching television "or whether they want to be as engaged as they are with the Internet," said David Cohen, senior vice president and interactive media director at Interpublic Group's Universal McCann. "All we can do now is test and see what works."

Internet Telephone Market to Rapidly Expand: PotmacTech, 7/25
Revenue from Internet telephone usage is expected
to grow more than tenfold over the next five years, according to new
research from Frost & Sullivan. The firm said that market revenue for
Voice over Internet protocol (VoIP) totaled $295.1 million in 2004,
but is expected to balloon to nearly $4.1 billion by 2010. According to
the report, once issues such as access to 911 networks are resolved,
VoIP-based services will flourish due to greater broadband
penetration, service providers' need to increase revenue and the
availability of low-priced services. "Residential subscribers are likely
to replace second lines with wireless or VoIP," said Lynda Starr, a
senior analyst for Frost & Sullivan. The number of VoIP lines is
expected to climb from 1.5 million to more than 18 million during the
period.
