Sprint Nextel Announce Unified Pricing Strategy & Mobile MP3 Downloads: Mobile Mag, 8/18
Sprint Nextel Corp, born out of the recent mega merger between Sprint Corporation and Nextel Communications, is swiftly moving towards a unified marketing and pricing strategy. The new entity has emerged as the number three player in the US mobile services market after Sprint bought out Nextel for a staggering sum of $39 billion. They have begun their joint inning with impressive numbers - 44 million customers and a market value of nearly $80 billion.

In the first combined public presentation, the officials of Sprint Nextel Corporation confirmed that a unified pricing and marketing strategy has been chalked out which will become effective soon. As the cornerstone of this strategy, customers of both the companies will be offered the same service rate plans starting from early next month, this will also mark the operational launch of the new company. For the launch, the new company has planned an advertising blitz. According to Len Lauer, Chief Operating Officer of Sprint Nextel, "The launch of the company will be much bigger than what Sprint would have done on its own, or Nextel." He, however, admitted that there would be pressure on the ad spending front in the first operational quarter but after that it will stabilize.

Sprint to Launch Music Download Service: Personal Tech Pipeline, 8/17
The newly-merged Sprint Nextel will launch a mobile music download service before the end of the year, the company told the Reuters news service Tuesday.  The company's chief operating officer, Len Lauer, indicated that the company could charge $2 per downloaded song. That's twice as much as Apple's iTunes service charges. In addition, subscription services such as those from Napster and Yahoo! are available that enable virtually unlimited downloads for a fixed amount per month.  "Customers are paying $2 for a shortened version of a song for a ringtone," Lauer told Reuters. "Will they pay the same for a full song, having the convenience of having it on (a cellphone)? I think they will."

# of Internet Phone Subscribers Soars: Herald Sun, 8/17
The number of consumers bypassing the traditional phone network and opting for Internet voice service is soaring beyond expectations.  An analysis by the TeleGeography research group found 2.7 million subscribers nationwide in the second quarter, compared with just 440,000 a year earlier.  The technology, known as Voice over Internet Protocol, or VoIP, requires a broadband Internet line but generally offers inexpensive calling plans and novel features such as the ability to manage voice mail on a Web page.

Sprint Nextel Braces for Affiliate Fight: WSJ, 8/18
Newly merged Sprint Nextel Corp. is gearing up for a bitter fight with an affiliated wireless operator that intends to exercise its right to make Sprint Nextel buy it out for billions of dollars. In a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission yesterday Sprint Nextel began building a case for paying far less for the nearly 69% of Nextel Partners Inc. that it doesn't already own than the affiliate and some investors might expect. Nextel Partners, based in Kirkland, Wash., has a market capitalization of $7.1 billion and some investors have been expecting a premium on top of the current share price. Under an agreement originally signed with Nextel, Nextel Partners has an option that gives it the right to force Sprint Nextel to buy it out. Nextel Partners, a so-called affiliate operator of Nextel, provides wireless service to 1.8 million customers in smaller cities and towns using Nextel's brand name and airwaves.

Court TV to Look @ Gangs in Durham: Herald Sun, 8/16
An upcoming Court TV documentary on gangs focuses in part on the situation in Durham.  The documentary -- "Al Roker Investigates: Menace on Main Street" -- is scheduled to air at 10 p.m. on Sept. 21, according to a Court TV news release.  "The only thing I've been told is that about 50 percent of the documentary concerns events going on in Durham, and that it could be perceived by Durhamites and those in the region as putting Durham in an unfavorable light," said County Manager Mike Ruffin.

Combo Cellular/Wi-FI Phones to Boost VOIP: 8/16
Internet phoning subscribers with combo cellular/Wi-Fi handsets are in the vanguard of a phenomenon that will pump up VoIP markets, according to a new study from In-Stat. Such users currently represent just two percent of the VoIP market.  The high tech market research firm predicted, in a report released Tuesday, that VoIP subscribers with wireless IP phones will represent 73 percent of the VoIP market in 2009. In-Stat said the first widespread rollouts of the dual-mode cellular/Wi-Fi phones will be in Europe from mobile telephone service providers that have no wireline operations.  Most U.S. cell phone service providers are owned at least partially by telecommunications providers who won’t be anxious to encourage competition between their wireline and cell-phone operations. In-Stat predicted that more than 66 million cellular/Wi-Fi phones will be in use by 2009.

BCBS Warns of Increases: Herald Sun, 8/15
The state's largest health insurer warned Monday that if medical costs continue to rise at their current pace, customers will face larger premium increases in the coming months.  Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina paid out $1.4 billion to hospitals and doctors in the first half of 2005, a $168 million increase over the first half of 2004. And while the insurer has lowered its profits in recent quarters by limiting premium increases, those controls may not last, said Chief Financial Officer Dan Glaser.

Ichan Recommends that Time Warner Sell Cable Unit, Buy Back Stock: PotomacTech, 8/15
Billionaire financier Carl Icahn is recommending that media giant Time Warner divest of its cable television business, but -- at least publicly -- isn't putting pressure on the company to sell Dulles- based America Online. In a statement released on Monday, Icahn and several hedge funds, who collectively own 120 million shares of Time Warner, said that Time Warner has "not moved quickly enough" on measures to increase shareholder value. Icahn, who said that he plans to meet with Time Warner CEO Dick Parsons, is recommending that the company separate its cable business from its content businesses, and immediately repurchase $20 billion in stock. Reports have circulated in recent days that Icahn would recommend that Time Warner sell its cable, publishing and AOL units

A Grade 'B' Move: Sprint Nextel to Saddle SPin-Off Group w/ 7.25B in Debt: LTW, 8/16
The spin-off of the local phone division from parent company Sprint-Nextel got off to a bit of an inauspicious start on Monday.

Parent Sprint Nextel announced some of its plans for the local group, which will be based near Kansas City and have a major operation in the Carolinas.

Among its key points were assigning the group, called “SpinCo” according to the Kansas City Business Journal until a formal name is picked, some $7.25 billion in debt. In a statement, Sprint Nextel said the local group would pay a cash dividend of $300 million.

However, the debt was immediately signed a rating of BBB-, the lowest level for investment grade bonds, by Fitch Ratings according to The Associated Press.

Japan's Cellphone Giant Tries Expansion Into Credit Cards: WSJ, 8/16
In Japan's buttoned-down corporate world, Takeshi Natsuno stands out. After joining the largest Japanese mobile-phone company in 1997, he repeatedly criticized the company's parent for being too staid -- even as he held lavish parties on the company tab. Amid a sea of blue-suited colleagues, he led a news conference wearing an ivory suit. He irked the sales staff by suggesting they sell phones in a glowing-orange color. They preferred gray. Now, the fate of NTT DoCoMo Inc. could rest on one of Mr. Natsuno's wildest ideas. With DoCoMo's revenue falling for the first time in its 13-year history, the 40-year-old American-educated executive says the company needs to evolve into something like a bank. He's pushing a new line of cellphones that work like an electronic wallet with cash stored inside. Within the next year or two DoCoMo plans to introduce phones with an embedded DoCoMo credit card, company officials say. The goal: to turn Japan into a credit-happy nation like America -- and to build a lucrative new profit center for the company. "We have to enlarge our battlefield," says Mr. Natsuno, who calls himself DoCoMo's "crazy barking dog." U.S. cellphone companies are counting on data services such as email and Internet access to drive growth for the next few years. But DoCoMo's experience suggests that strategy can only work for so long. Given the Japanese company's record as a trendsetter, it wouldn't be surprising if U.S. companies also end up trying to turn their products into something more than communications devices.

DWANGO Wirless CEO Resigns: Wireless Week, 8/16
Rick Hennessey has relinquished the reins at Dwango Wireless following a lackluster second quarter, which included a loss of more than $5 million.  Dwango reported revenue of $885,000 for the second quarter, which is a far cry from the stellar $1 million sales posted in the previous quarter. In the first quarter of the year, the time the company mainly attributed the revenue results to the launch of its exclusive catalog of ringtones developed under an agreement with RollingStone.com. Dwango said, however, in the second quarter, there was a fall-off of Rolling Stone downloads, which attributed to the overall decrease in revenue for the quarter.
In other Dwango news, the company announced the expansion of its Napster ringtone service with the launch of action-sports themed ringtones and wallpapers. The new content includes exclusive shout outs from Team Napster snowboarder Marc Frank Montoya, Supercross/Motocross racer Kevin Windham and freestyle motocross rider Adam Jones.

Ingenio, Verizon Start Pay-Per Call Service: DMNews, 8/16
Ingenio Inc. launched a platform yesterday that lets agencies, search optimization companies and other third-party firms manage Ingenio’s pay-per-call ad campaigns for their clients.  The San Francisco company debuted pay-per-call ad technology late last year within the Miva Network. In April, AOL was the first major search engine to serve Ingenio’s pay-per-call ads. Now, agencies and others can customize pay-per-call campaigns for their clients, using Ingenio’s new Application Programming Interface program.  Meanwhile, Verizon SuperPages.com debuted its pay-for-calls ad service at last week’s Search Engine Strategies 2005 show in San Jose, CA. Using its own technology, SuperPages’ print and online advertisers can choose to bid on pay for calls, which generates calls based on bidding for ads, like SuperPages’ pay-per-click model.

Startup Offers Consumers Private Networking: Internet Week, 8/15
Startup Imeem Inc. on Monday launched its desktop software that lets people build their own private social networks with friends and family, so they can share files, such as photos and music; and communicate through blogs, instant messaging and chat rooms.  The Imeem software is available without charge, but the company hopes to make money by selling advertising that would be displayed to subscribers based on their use of the company's software. No information on the user would leave the desktop, officials with the Palo Alto, Calif., company said.
The fact that personal information won't be shared with anyone, unless a person chooses to share it, is what the company says is a major advantage to its products. While people can choose to build a blog on Imeem server, and share their journal with anyone interested in seeing it, they can also limit viewers to a specific group of people.

11% of Blog Readers Use RSS Technology to Manage Feeds: Potomac Tech, 8/16
About 11% of weblog readers use RSS (Really Simple Syndication) to sort through the increasing number of blogs available, according to a new study by Nielsen//NetRatings. The firm said that 5% of blog readers use feed aggregation software and more than 6% percent use a feed aggregating web site to monitor RSS feeds from blogs. "While RSS is an established technology, the growing popularity of blogs has catapulted RSS into the spotlight as a content personalization tool," said Jon Gibs, a senior research manager for Nielsen//NetRatings. The majority of respondents to the survey were less familiar with RSS feeds. Among the other respondents, 23% understood RSS but did not use it, while two-thirds either did not understand the technology or had never heard of it.

Cynthia B. "It was a difficult decision to leave Cree as I have truly enjoyed both professionally and personally almost nine years with the company.  However, due to the changes in the public corporate environment in recent years and my desire to spend more time with my family, I have decided to pursue new challenges for the next part of my career," Ms. Merrell stated.  "With the completion of the first assessment of our internal controls under section 404 of the Sarbanes-Oxley law of 2002 and the dismissal of the securities lawsuit last week, I believe that the timing of my resignation is appropriate as the company is well positioned for it's next phase of growth."

Researchers Vet VOIP's Value: Light Reading, 8/12
While more folks than ever are turning to VOIP services, VOIP's sway over the industry and its threat to traditional phone companies is now facing increased skepticism. Insight Research Corp. says in a recent report that traditional phone companies will lose somewhere around $96 billion in revenues by 2010 thanks to the emergence of VOIP services. That's a huge number, but still relatively small compared to the total telecom service revenues of $1.8 trillion that phone companies are expected to pull in that yearVOIP is definitely having an impact on the telecom services world, but it won't be anything close to domination for several years to come.  Some researchers even see the VOIP market slipping from where they originally expected it to be. In 2004 Frost & Sullivan said the North American residential VOIP market would be worth $5.4 billion by 2008. But the firm’s July report had scaled back expectations significantly; it now predicts that the market will be worth only $4.1 billion by 2010 (see F&S Predicts NA VOIP Growth).

AOL Making Wireless Move: USA Today, 8/8
America Online announced Monday that it's accelerating its move into cell phone services through the acquisition of a software company, Wildseed, which will be part of a new unit called the AOL Wireless Group. "We believe that wireless is one of the biggest places for AOL to play in," says AOL Wireless General Manager Craig Eisler. The deal with privately held Wildseed "enables us to offer new products like instant messaging for phones, and great photo and music experiences for phones. "The companies did not disclose terms of the acquisition, which closed late Friday. Wildseed, based near Seattle, is best known for its phone-personalization software, which it sells to manufacturers, service providers and content companies. That could be important for Time Warner's (TWX) AOL as it competes with Yahoo (YHOO), Google (GOOG), Microsoft (MSFT) and other Internet companies eager to expand into phone services.   AOL also hopes the deal, and the formation of a new division focusing on wireless, will help it to pull ahead of its competitors."We were late to the party with search and mail, although we have it now," Eisler says. "Now we want to change the game and take it to the next level." Like many Internet companies, AOL found that it's hard to duplicate an Internet experience on cell phones — in part because of signal interruptions. As a result, Eisler says, the company wants to pre-load functions into a phone so users can listen to music, look at pictures or play games without long waits for applications to be transmitted.

Sprint Completes Tender Offer For Affiliate US Unwired, Potomac Tech, 8/15
With its $35 billion merger with Reston-based Nextel Communications expected to close before day's end, Sprint on Friday said that it has completed its tender offer for the outstanding shares of Louisiana affiliate US Unwired, which once threatened to hold up the Nextel deal. Sprint agreed to buy US Unwired in July after the affiliate asked a federal judge to halt the merger, claiming that the move would violate its right to exclusively offer Sprint's services in parts of the South. US Unwired provides Sprint PCS services in nine states, serving more than 500,000 direct wireless subscribers in 48 markets. It employs about 600 people and had 2004 revenue of $408 million. Sprint acquired about 95% of US Unwired's shares through the tender offer. http://biz.yahoo.com/prnews/050812/cgf010.html?.v=20

In Mobile Phones, Older Users Say, More is Less: WSJ, 8/15
At a time when cellphones are letting users do more tricks, from video calling to downloading digital music, one of the latest models from Vodafone Group PLC has no camera, no browser and hardly any icons. Instead of being sleeker and cooler than ever, the phone is large and ordinary-looking.What it is, though, is easy to use, and if Vodafone is right, the market will love it. That's because of who its market is: people getting up in years. If the battery on the Vodafone Simply, as it's called, gets low, the phone doesn't signal this with a tiny icon somewhere. Instead, on its screen, the words "please charge" appear. If a message is waiting, a light flashes, like in old-fashioned answering machines. To help people who tend to lose their phones around the house and let the battery run down, this one comes with a stand that serves as a place to stow the thing, and charges it while it's there.  Vodafone is offering the Simply in nine countries so far, not including the U.S., a market in which it participates through a 45% stake in Verizon Wireless. The U.S. cellphone market still is growing briskly, although its growth, too, is expected to slow before long. The countries where Vodafone Simply is available are the U.K., Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Sweden, Spain, Portugal, Greece and New Zealand.

“Sprint Nextel has begun the process of separating the operations of Sprint's local telecommunications business, including consumer, business and wholesale operations, and will seek regulatory approvals to spin off the local telecommunications business to Sprint Nextel shareholders in a tax-free transaction, which is expected to be completed in 2006,” Sprint Nextel said in a statement.

US Ringtone Downloads Up Fourfold in Past Year: Potomac Tech, 8/13
Nearly one-quarter (23%) of American cell phone owners have downloaded ringtones to their handsets over the past year, up from just 5% during the previous year, according to a report from market research firm Ipsos-Insight. Over half of Americans ages 12-24 have now downloaded a ringtone. "What we're now witnessing in the mobile arena is similar to what has already occurred in many places outside the U.S., and represents yet another opportunity for industries looking to monetize U.S.-based digital music distribution," said Matt Kleinschmit, a vice president with Ipsos. The study additionally found that 6% of U.S. cell phone owners have downloaded a full-length song to their handsets, while 3% have downloaded a short video clip and 2% have downloaded a music video.

Bored on the Phone? Beware of Jerk-O-Meter: Herald Sun, 8/11
Ever wonder if that spouse, friend or co-worker on the other end of the phone is really paying attention? The "Jerk-O-Meter" may hold the answer. Researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology are developing software for cell phones that would analyze speech patterns and voice tones to rate people -- on a scale of 0 to 100 percent -- on how engaged they are in a conversation.  Anmol Madan, who led the project while he pursued a master's degree at MIT, sees the Jerk-O-Meter as a tool for improving relationships, not ending them. Or it might assist telephone sales and marketing efforts.

Bank Certificates of Deposit Paying More: News & Observer, 8/13
After nearly three years in the basement, certificates of deposit and other short-term savings are making a comeback, offering new options and markedly higher returns. Most now aim to beat the inflation rate -- about 2 percent over the last year -- while many others boast returns in the range of 3 percent to 4 percent. That's a sharp increase from the 1 percent yields of last summer. As rates rise, banks are dusting off short-term savings instruments and in many cases jazzing them up with new features such as adjustable rates, low minimum deposits, flexible term lengths and reduced penalties on early withdrawals.

Sprint, Nextel Employees Compete to Keep Their Jobs:  Washington Post, 8/11
While most of Washington's tech sector has sunk into heat-induced sedation, the folks over at Sprint Corp . and Nextel Communications Inc. are frenetically toiling away. As executives of the two companies wrap up a $35 billion merger, rank-and-file employees have been busy with a different task: interviewing for their own jobs.  Executives decided the most egalitarian way to staff the new company would be to put all of the positions up for grabs and let workers from both firms duke it out.  Not surprisingly, that has people from both Sprint and Nextel completely on edge.

Cellular Revenues $570B in '05: TMC Net, 8/10
Strategy Analytics, the global research and consulting company, today released its Wireless Network Strategies updated global cellular market report, "Worldwide Cellular User Forecast 2005-2010," forecasting that the worldwide cellular user base will increase from 1.7 billion at the end of 2005 to 2.5 billion by the end of 2010, a 38 percent penetration rate. With average revenues falling 7 percent to $30 per user per month in 2005, Strategy Analytics expects further weakness in global ARPUs as increasingly prepaid-centric and low-ARPU China, India and other emerging markets remain the engine for user growth.  Phil Kendall, report author and director of wireless operator research at Strategy Analytics, commented, "Voice usage will increase from 5.6 trillion minutes in 2005 to 12.6 trillion in 2010. GSM-based systems will continue to dominate the cellular landscape, accounting for 81 percent of subscribers and 76 percent of service revenues in 2010, though CDMA's more rapid evolution to 3G will see it dominate 3G subscriber volumes in the medium term. New Nextel-Sprint will Focus on 3rd Screen: Usa Today, 8/11
Sprint and Nextel have a game plan for the future, and it's not what you might think. The playbook goes like this: Merge the two companies to create a wireless giant, then transform the combined company — yet again — into a broadband Bigfoot that can compete head-on with Verizon and SBC Communications.   "It's all about the third screen," says Sprint CEO Gary Forsee, referring to the pint-sized video screens on wireless phones that are fast becoming ubiquitous.  The first two screens, of course, would be the TV and the PC. Forsee thinks the wireless screen, which is rapidly evolving into a mobile media center for millions of users, is the next great broadband opportunity.  Looking back, the two CEOs say their decision to merge was driven not so much by the need to get more wireless customers — Sprint was already the No. 3 wireless carrier, and Nextel was No. 5. Rather, they say, the merger was aimed at transforming the two carriers into another type of animal entirely.  That animal, so it seems, will be part Hollywood, part wireless carrier, part broadband powerhouse. The driver of that change: the oodles of 2.5-gigahertz spectrum that Sprint and Nextel jointly own.

Mint takes VoIP on the Go: Extreme Tech, 8/11
Mint Telecom has developed a termination service that allows VOIP calls to be transferred to any number you choose, including a cell phone. Mint's new service consists of two different aspects: outgoing callers can dial a local access number, similar to a calling card, and have the call automatically routed to any specific number around the world. Likewise, customers, clients or friends living in another country can receive their own local number, which can route calls to the Mint number designated by the user. The kicker, according to Mint chief executive Jason Jepson, is that by setting a local number, callers can call locally and then be routed internationally, for a small fee. Callers receiving calls can also choose to have terminate on their cell phones, which, in the U.S., costs the same as termination on a landline.

Sore ARMs? A Peek Inside Potential Mortgage Troubles: WSJ, 8/10
California isn't the best place to go looking for canaries -- unless they're metaphorical ones. The state has one of the frothiest housing markets, and banks have been enablers. Investors looking for early warnings of trouble in the mortgage industry should give Downey Financial's numbers a look. Two weeks ago, I wrote about the rising popularity of option adjustable-rate mortgages, especially in the land of Schwarzenegger. Option ARMs give borrowers the ability to make a minimum monthly payment that results in the balance of what's owed going up. Lots of people are doing that, seemingly oblivious to the risk: Interest rates are rising, and if housing prices fall, homeowners could end up unable to afford the monthly nut on a home they'd have to sell at a loss. But, as I noted, investors haven't been able to gauge banks' exposure adequately because the disclosure generally is poor, though that problem has improved a bit recently. At Downey, disclosure is good; it's the exposure that's bad. A small Newport Beach, Calif., bank with a stock-market value of $2 billion, Downey writes option ARMs like Californian plumbers write screenplays.

FCC Rules Telcos Need Not Share DSL Lines With Competitors: Potomac Tech, 8/9
The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has ruled that telephone companies that provide DSL Internet access no longer have to lease their high-speed broadband lines to competitors. Some analysts believe that the FCC's 4-0 vote could force many smaller Internet service providers out of business, while others like EarthLink and AOL could be forced to pay more to telephone companies to use their lines. The ruling won't go into effect for one year, so that ISPs can inform customers of the changes and make preparations. The FCC's DSL ruling follows a recent Supreme Court decision that similarly said that cable TV providers do not have to open their high-speed networks to competition. FCC chairman Kevin Martin called the ruling "an explicit recognition that the telecommunications marketplace that exists today is vastly different from the one governed by regulators over 30 years ago." Consumer groups worried the ruling will lead to higher broadband prices.

Sprint- Nextel Acquisition to Close Friday: Herald Sun, 8/9
Sprint Corp. said Tuesday it will complete its acquisition of Nextel Communications Inc. on Friday and begin trading as a unified stock on Monday. Overland Park-based Sprint and Reston, Va.-based Nextel will merge to become the third-largest wireless provider in the country, providing an equal competitor to industry leaders Cingular Wireless and Verizon Wireless. The Federal Communications Commission and the Justice Department signed off on the consolidation last week with very few conditions, saying there is still adequate competition to keep the company from dominating the markets it is in. Shareholders for both companies have already approved the deal.
